Verifying your identity

What to expect from the ID and selfie step, why we ask for it, and what happens to your data.

Written by Angelica Javier

Identity verification is a one-time step that unlocks full access to your Saltbox location. It happens in the mobile app and takes about a minute.

Why we verify identity

Saltbox members share space with other businesses, and knowing who walks through the door is the foundation of a safe, trusted community. Verifying your identity is also how we provision your door access β€” it's the gate between "account created" and "you can unlock the building."

Who handles the verification

We partner with Stripe, the payments and identity company used by millions of businesses, to handle verification. Your ID and selfie are processed by Stripe directly. Saltbox doesn't see or store your ID image or your selfie β€” we only see whether verification passed and when your ID expires.

What you'll do

  1. Open the Saltbox App on your phone and sign in.

  2. On the home screen, tap Start Verification.

  3. The app will guide you through scanning the front and back of your government-issued ID.

  4. Take a quick selfie so Stripe can confirm it's you.

  5. Wait a few seconds. Most verifications come back as approved instantly.

Once you're verified, the verification banner disappears from your home screen and you're set.

What documents we accept

  • US driver's license

  • US state ID

  • US passport

  • Stripe also supports government-issued IDs from over 100 other countries β€” passports, driver's licenses, and national IDs

What can happen during verification

There are four ways verification can resolve. Knowing them helps set expectations:

  • Approved instantly. This is the most common outcome. You'll see a success screen and can keep going.

  • Quick retry needed. Usually a photo issue (lighting, blur, glare, or part of the ID covered). Tap Retry and try again with better lighting and a steady hand.

  • Approved after a short wait. Sometimes Stripe needs a few minutes to process. You'll see a "verifying" state and get a notification when it's done.

  • Needs a closer look. Rarely, verification fails for a reason that isn't fixable by a retry. Tap Contact Support in the app and we'll work through it with you.

A few common questions

  • How long does it take? Usually seconds. Sometimes a few minutes. If it's been longer than 10 minutes with no update, reach out via in-app chat.

  • Do my teammates need to verify their identity too? Only if their account includes building access. Remote-only teammates can skip this step entirely.

  • What if I don't have a US government ID? Stripe accepts IDs from over 100 countries. If yours isn't recognized, tap Contact Support in the app and we'll find a path together.

  • Can someone at Saltbox bypass this for me? No β€” and that's intentional. Identity verification is the same for everyone, which is part of what keeps the community safe.

  • How is my data kept secure? Stripe encrypts your information and stores verification data on their side. Saltbox never receives your ID image or selfie. If you'd like to learn more about Stripe's privacy practices or request data actions, visit stripe.com/privacy-center.
